Phase Transitions in Two-Dimensional Colloidal Systems
This chapter is an introduction to phase transitions in two-dimensional (2D) systems. In contrast to three dimensions (3D), microscopic theories of melting exist in 2D. The most well known of them was developed more than 30 years ago by Kosterlitz, Thouless, Halperin, Nelson, and Young (KTHNY theory). This theory predicts the unbinding of topological defects to break the symmetry in two steps a...
متن کاملsynthesis of platinum nanostructures in two phase system
Phase transitions in a two-component site-bond percolation model
A method for analyzing a N-component percolation model in terms of one parameter p1 is presented. In Monte Carlo simulations on 16, 32, 64, and 128 simple cubic lattices the percolation threshold p1 c is determined for N52. Continuous transitions of p1 c are reported in two limits for the bond existence probabilities p5 and pÞ . In the same limits, empirical formulas for the percolation thresho...
متن کاملRole of block junctions in the interplay of phase transitions of two-component polymeric systems.
Block junctions are the topological constraints of connecting two homopolymers of different species to form diblock copolymers, which make the phase transition behaviors of diblock copolymers deviate from that of parallel polymer blends. We performed dynamic Monte Carlo simulations of these two parallel polymeric systems to compare their behaviors in the interplay of phase transitions. The resu...
متن کاملPhase transitions in systems with two species of molecular motors
– Systems with two species of active molecular motors moving on (cytoskeletal) filaments into opposite directions are studied theoretically using driven lattice gas models. The motors can unbind from and rebind to the filaments. Two motors are more likely to bind on adjacent filament sites if they belong to the same species. These systems exhibit (i) Continuous phase transitions towards states ...
